Solid state dewetting of thin Fe-C-Fe trilayer (nano-steel) deposited on sapphire. The film underwent the bcc-fcc phase transformation upon heating. Guess what were the orientations of the grains that resulted in these nice dewetting patterns!

Solid state dewetting of thin quasi-single crystalline Au(Fe) film on sapphire. The hexagonal hole is an expression of a profound film anisotropy. Thin polycrystalline Au film of a similar thickness fully breaks down into isolated particles after annealing under identical conditions.

Simply a funny image of the solid state dewetting of thin Ni film
